Most modern homes use the formal dining room for entertaining. They will have a smaller nook for family meals. This is usually found near the kitchen where food can be quickly brought to the table as well as dirty tableware back to the kitchen for cleanup. Everything will be within easy reach. This is a convenient arrangement as everybody will be rushing in the morning and there is not much time for more formal arrangements.

In affluent homes, a formal dining room will usually have a chandelier in the center, accentuated by lampshades that will provide diffused lighting. There will be a large table and formal dining room chairs. The most traditional table will be a rectangular wooden table; the chairs will usually be upholstered, providing comfort to guests. A formal dining room set will be a rather expensive investment. But that is nothing compared to the enjoyment of having friends over and taking pleasure in a pleasant dinner and lively conversation.
