Colonial Eating Habits
Cast iron cookware has found reappearance in recent times. It brings you back to the times of colonial and pioneer America. More common then were cooking pots that usually had three legs. This was because they were designed to be used over open fire. Colonial kitchens doubled as the fireplace for heating the room. Cast iron grill pans came much later when they learned how to cook over a stove top.
Have you ever wondered what kind of food the pioneers were cooking then? Settlers brought their recipes and cooking methods but they also used a lot of local foods. Breakfast was taken early if you were poor, because you had to go to the field early to start work before the sun was up. It will usually be a mug of cider or beer gulped down with a bowl of porridge that had been cooking slowly all night. Dinner was their mid day meal and was considered the biggest meal of the day. It would normally consist of stews that included pork and vegetables and roots that were available in their yard. Supper was usually a light repast.
